If you read my blog on a regular basis, then you know that I'm really into health, wellness and natural beauty.  In fact, I'm pretty much obsessed with it.  My coworkers think I'm crazy because I'm always bringing in homemade juices and smoothies, coconut water and making what they think are fancy lunches.   Yes, I do get made fun of all the time for being a health nut at work :), but I've been down some rough roads with my health and have learned from my mistakes.

For the last five years or so, I began to learn as much as I could about wellness and staying healthy through food and living holistically.  I'm constantly reading new books, articles and blogs to teach myself how to take care of my body better.  I feel that I have been on the right track for some time now, but hey, I can always learn something new!

The latest blog I've discovered is kimberlysnyder.net.  Kimberly is a celebrity nutritionist and her blog is full of great information.  I also bought her book, The Beauty Detox Solution, which I'm reading right now.  Now, over the years, I've accumulated some great info on healthy living, but sometimes there's just one little thing that pops up that's new that I can't believe I didn't know before.  So here is what I learned from Kim...drink a full glass or two of lemon water first thing in the morning before you eat anything.

I had already known to drink a glass of water in the morning, which I had been doing, but I didn't know the benefits of adding lemon juice to the water.

Benefits

  • Lemon aids digestion which is great for first thing in the morning because it helps rid your body of waste before you start your day.
  • Lemon is very alkalizing.  The more I learn about health and wellness, the more I keep seeing that an acidic body is a sick body and an alkaline body is a healthy body.  Basically, the more alkaline we are, the more our body is able to function at it's best and fight off disease.
  • It helps clear your skin...being the natural beauty addict that I am, this benefit I'm obviously stoked about!  By aiding digestion and being very alkaline, the lemon water removes toxins and wastes from our body resulting in clearer skin.  It's true, I've noticed a difference in my own skin.

So I've been drinking lemon water for a week now and honestly I feel great in the morning!  To make it a little more interesting, I've added frozen organic blueberries and raspberries for some added flavor and it's a pretty amazing way to start your day.  I love the subtle flavors of the berries with the lemon.  Also, remember to use organic lemons too since the non organic are heavily sprayed with pesticides.

Aren't they pretty?

I also want to mention that Kimberly suggest drinking steaming hot water with lemon.  For me, I feel better and more energized when I drink room temperature water.  I might change my mind in the future, but for right now, that's what I prefer.  Also, I follow the lemon water with either a homemade vegetable juice or homemade fruit sorbet or both if I have time.  I seriously can't tell you how great it feels to start out the day this way.

I hope this helps anyone out that's looking for ways to add some wellness in their lives!

xoxo...Kate
